What is Suppression?
Suppression is used to hide data when the respondent or response base is low.
Why use Suppression?
Ensuring Data Reliability - If there isn't sufficient data to make a statistic dependable or "reliable," it’s usually best to not display it. This is because insufficient data can lead users to form inaccurate perceptions. Thus, a minimum threshold of data points, or a "records base," is needed for statistical calculations. If the actual data points are below this threshold, the resulting statistic is considered unreliable and therefore, it should be suppressed or hidden.
Protecting Respondent Anonymity - If there are only a few respondents in a data set, it might be possible to identify them, which can be a privacy concern. Therefore, results derived from a low number of respondents should be hidden to safeguard their identities. To do this, a "respondents base" (the number of respondents contributing to the data in a specific row/column/cell) needs to be calculated. If this base is low, particularly sensitive results should be suppressed to protect privacy.
